01 Pure Beginner Cannot communicate in elementary, predictable everyday situations. Has an extremely limited vocabulary and cannot express simple needs.
02 False Beginner Can communicate in a very limited way in simple, predictable everyday situations. Has a very basic range of language which he or she can use to express simple needs.
03 Pre-Intermediate – Can communicate at a basic level, asking for and exchanging simple information. Has enough basic vocabulary and grammar to make himself or herself understood in a limited number of predictable situations.
04 Pre-Intermediate + Can communicate at a basic level, asking for and exchanging simple information and describing events. Has a repertoire of basic language and strategies which enables him or her to deal with predictable everyday situations.

05 Intermediate –
Can deal with practical everyday demands: finding out and passing on simple information and taking part in conversation. Has a relatively wide range of simple language and strategies. Can communicate adequately in familiar everyday situations.

06 Intermediate +
Can understand extensive simple information encountered in everyday situations and maintain conversation and discussion on topics of interest. Can exploit a wide range of simple language flexibly to express much of what he or she wants to. Can communicate adequately in routine professional contexts.

07 Upper Intermediate –
Can understand information on topics of interest in unsimplified and straightforward language and can find different ways of formulating what he or she wants to express. Has assimilated the essentials of the language. Can communicate competently in many professional as well as personal contexts.

08 Intermediate +
Can express ideas and opinions clearly on a wide range of topics, and understand and exchange information reliably. Has an active command of the essentials of the language. Can communicate competently and independently in many professional as well as personal contexts.

09 Lower Advanced
Can express points of view on a wide range of topics clearly and effectively, and process information reliably. Has a sufficient command of the language to be able to adopt appropriate formulation in many different circumstances. Can communicate confidently and competently in both professional and personal contexts.

10 Advanced
Can express himself or herself clearly and fluently, exploiting a reliable command of a wide range of language with a high degree of accuracy. Can adapt his or her expression appropriately to the situation. Can communicate confidently in well-structured language in both personal and professional contexts.

11 Upper Advanced
Can exploit a comprehensive and reliable mastery of the language to communicate with accuracy and precision even in difficult personal and professional contexts, in language appropriate to the situation and his or her purpose. Can understand and interpret complex input accurately, including much non-standard usage, and recognize subtle distinctions of style and meaning.
